- Question 1: What was the name of the leader of the Israelite army who led the invasion of Canaan and what was his tribe? See Joshua 1:1-2 and Numbers 13:8, 16.
- Answer: The leader of the Israelite army was Joshua son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim.
- Question 2: When and where was the invasion point and what miracle allowed them to cross the River Jordan? Joshua 3:14-17; 4:19-24; Exodus 12:2; 13:4.
- Answer: The Israelites invaded from the east side of the Jordan River to the west and camped at Gilgah near Jericho "on the tenth day of the first month" of Abib (Aviv) at the time of the spring harvest and 5 days before the Passover sacrifice (as the ancients counted with no concept of a zero-place value). When the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the water, the waters flowing from upstream stopped flowing and backed up in a solid wall, holding back the waters of the Jordan River for the people to pass to the western bank.
- Question 3: Who was the Canaanite woman who helped the Israelite spies at Jericho? What was her occupation? Joshua 2:1-2.
- Answer: Rahab of Jericho.
- Question 4: What oath did the Israelites swear to her for her help? Did they keep their oath? Joshua 2:14, 18-21; 6:22-25.
- Answer: The Israelites swore to protect Rahab and her family. They kept their oath and after the city fell Rabah and her family became a part of the people of Israel.
- Question 5: What was this Canaanite woman's connection to King David and Jesus? Matthew 1:1, 5.
- Answer: Rahab was in the ancestral line of both King David and Jesus.
- Question 6: How many times did the Israelites march around the walled city of Jericho before the walls collapsed? Joshua 6:1-5, 12-17, 20.
- Answer: They were told to march around the city walls one time for each of six days. On the seventh day they marched around the city seven times, for a total of 13 times marching around the city walls. After the 13th march (the 7th march on the seventh day) the priests blew their horns and the people shouted and the walls of the city fell.
- Question 7: Where did the Israelites bury the bones of Joseph son of Jacob/Israel that they brought with them from Egypt? Joshua 24:32-33.
- Answer: The Israelites buried Joseph's bones at Shechem on land Jacob/Israel purchased before the 12 tribes migrated to Egypt.
- Question 8: Who was the only woman to serve as a judge of Israel? Judges 4:4-5; 5:31b.
- Answer: Deborah, the prophetess of the tribe of Ephraim judged the Israelites for 40 years.
- Question 9: Where did the Israelites defeat the Canaanite army led by Sisera? Who led the Israelites? Judges 4:6, 12-10, 14-16.
- Answer: Deborah and her general Barak defeated the Canaanite army at Mt. Tabor.
- Question 10: Why did God tell Israel's leaders chose Mt. Tabor as the site of the battle?
- Answer: The Canaanite army had chariots and the Israelites did not. The chariots were only effective in warfare on an open plain.
- Question 11: How did Sisera die? Judges 4:11, 17-22.
- Answer: He was killed by a woman named Jael, the wife of a Kenite ally of the Israelites.
- Question 12: How many Israelite commandoes did Gideon use to defeat the Midianite army? Judges 7:8, 16-22.
- Answer: Gideon divided his 3 hundred men into 3 groups of 100; they defeated the Midianites in a surprise night attach.
- Question 13: Who was the judge of Israel whose birth was foretold by an angel? Judges 13:1-25.
- Question 14: What was the source of Samson's strength and who was the woman who betrayed him? Numbers 6:1-8; Judges 13:4-5; 16:4-5, 17-21.
- Answer: Samson was a Nazirite, consecrated to God from his mother's womb. The hair on his head was the source of his strength. He was betrayed by a Philistine woman he loved whose name was Deliah.
- Question 15: What happened to Samson and how did he get his revenge? Judges 16:22-30.
- Answer: The Philistines gouged out his eyes and had him bound to a millstone to grind the grain in the prison in Gaza. When his hair grew back it happened that the Philistines forgot the source of his strength and when they had him tied to the pillars of their pagan temple to make fun of him God gave returned his strength and he pulled down the support pillars of the temple.
